Our commitment at the Readshaw Funeral Home, Inc. is to provide families with personal service and to help them select the type of funeral service that best assists them in coping with their loss.

We understand the difficulty in trying to select a funeral service for your loved one and the stress that is placed on you. We will assist you step by step in making necessary funeral arrangements and provide you with the information that will be needed in making those decisions. Here is a list of items that we will need from you:

• Social Security Number
  
• Veterans Discharge Papers (If applicable)
• Clothing, photo and jewelry (If desired)
• Cemetery and church information
• Parents names, birth place, date of birth
• Occupation
• Any fraternal or military organizations

When we meet with the family for the first consultation:

• We will secure all the vital statistic and obituary notice information
• We will assist you in selecting the times for visitation (traditional hours are 2-4 & 7-9 PM, but these can be adjusted to meet the families needs.)
• We will help in selection of clergy if you do not have one, and if you would like to have the funeral service in the funeral home or the church.
• We will assist you in selecting a cemetery location if you do not already have one.
• We will assist you in selecting a casket and vault from our selection room.
• If you cannot come to the funeral home to make these decisions we will come to your home for your convenience.

We will continue to be of service:

• Secure the time of service with the clergy and cemetery.
• Obtain the casket and vault.
• Obtain the death certificate from the doctor and complete the information required by law to file the certificate and permits and obtain your certified copies.
• File social security and veterans claim forms.
• Help file insurance claims for life insurance proceeds.
• Provide the register book, prayer cards and acknowledgment cards.
• Arranging the floral tributes.
• Preparing the deceased as required by law (embalming, *washing, disinfecting, dressing, cosmetizing and hairdressing).
• Being present for the calling hours and taking are of any aspects related to the funeral and committal service.

As a continuation of our service to you and your family, we have designed a grief assistance program that will be provided to you during the coming year. You will be provided with a series of informative booklets, titled "The Family Care Series." In addition to these beautifully presented booklets, our aftercare coordinator, Linda Findlay, is available to assist you in any way you need.

*Except in certain special cases, embalming is not required by law. Embalming may be necessary, however, if you select certain arrangements, such as a funeral with viewing. If you do not want embalming, you usually have the right to choose an arrangement that does not require you to pay for it, such as direct cremation or direct burial.

When a cremation is selected as part of a funeral service there are many options that can be selected. Before a decision is made here is additional information that may help you in making your final selection.

What is cremation:

Cremation is the process of which the body is returned to its natural elements by the use of extreme heat. Cremated remains are primarily bone fragments.

Is Embalming Necessary:

Embalming is not required as long as there is no public viewing or as long as the funeral service takes place within 24 hours of death. Otherwise embalming is required by Pennsylvania Law. The reason for embalming is for preservation and disinfecting of the body.

Why People choose cremation:

Many people select cremation for cultural, religious and economic reasons. Cremation can be less expensive than a traditional funeral service but this depends on type of service and merchandise selected. However you don't have to give up a traditional funeral service with cremation.

What are my choices:

With cremation you have choices:

• Traditional public viewing and service at the church or funeral home
• A private viewing with a service
• A private viewing with no service
• A memorial service may be held at any time that is convenient for you
• Remains can be buried or scattered

Should you Pre-plan your cremation service:

Just by making your desires known that you wish to be cremated does not necessarily mean that your wishes will be carried out. To best insure your desires it is wise to pre-arrange with your local funeral director.
